Happiness often sneaks in through a door you didn’t know you left open. ~John Barrymore
This is similar to a quote that we posted last week by Edith Wharton: If only we’d stop trying to be happy we could have a pretty good time. ~Edith Wharton
When Barrymore says that happiness often sneaks in through a door that you didn’t know you left open he means that the nature of happiness is so illusive that it can come when least expected. This quote also implies that happiness is something that often can’t be sought after but rather surprises us at times.
This quote is also incredibly hopeful, and I recommend reading it when you feel a bit sad or directionless. Sometimes just sitting still and doing nothing will bring happiness. … Read the rest
If only we’d stop trying to be happy we could have a pretty good time. ~Edith Wharton
This quote reminds me of how our society seems to be searching everywhere constantly for happiness. And when we are not happy we seek outside things to make us happy quickly, whether they be pharmaceutical or retail or give us a distraction. But I think what Edith Wharton is saying in this quote is that in the search for happiness, the implication is that we are not happy.
Happiness shouldn’t be a goal, even though it is intuitive to think about it in that way. Because if you look at happiness as a goal, you automatically will feel like you are failing whenever you aren’t happy. … Read the rest
“Learn to enjoy every minute of your life. Be happy now. Don’t wait for something outside of yourself to make you happy in the future. Think how really precious is the time you have to spend, whether it’s at work or with your family. Every minute should be enjoyed and savored.” – Earl Nightengale
This quote is so true. I find that most of the people I know including myself are always fretting over the little things in life and missing the big picture. How amazing life is! I bet right now, you are probably thinking if I were richer/prettier/more famous/had more friends I would be happy. Well you are not alone. Practically everybody wants something more and thinks that they will never be happy until they get it. … Read the rest
If you have the opportunity to play this game of life you need to appreciate every moment. a lot of people don`t appreciate the moment until it`s passed.
Maybe this song quote explains why Kanye West is always pulling bizarre stunts in public – because he’s afraid that if he doesn’t appreciate the moment by doing something crazy, it could pass him by. But if you take his crazy antics out of the picture, this quote is very true. It is very easy to not appreciate it, and get bogged down in all the responsibilities, and crap life throws your way. But Kanye is right. There are so many opportunities in life to appreciate every moment.
So whatever is happening your life right now. … Read the rest
The talent for being happy is appreciating and liking what you have, instead of what you don’t have. ~Woody Allen
So much of our own happiness levels are based on our own perceptions rather than what we actually have or don’t have. How often have you seen a cheery person who always seems to look on the bright side of life despite whatever setback they may encounter.
I was watching a documentary recently that showed that 6 months after people won the lottery or 6 months after being in a horrible car accident, study subjects returned to their baseline levels of happiness. So it doesn’t matter if you win the lottery or are crippled in a car accident. These things will give you a temporary burst of happiness or misery, but your normal level of happiness will prevail after about 6 months. … Read the rest
“I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, ‘If this isn’t nice, I don’t know what is.’” – Kurt Vonnegut
This happiness quote is actually attributed to Kurt’s uncle, but he has also said it and it is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever heard. So often, it is hard to know when you are happy, most people only realized they were happy when looking back over the past. It is so tricky to think ‘I’m happy’ when it is actually happening in the present.
The point of this quote is to notice, mindfully, that you are happy in the present moment and feel grateful that you are happy. … Read the rest
