Life… is like a box of chocolates – a cheap, thoughtless, perfunctory gift that no one ever asks for, unreturnable because all you get back is another box of chocolates. So, you’re stuck with mostly undefinable whipped mint crap, mindlessly wolfed down when there’s nothing else to eat while you’re watching the game. Sure, once is a while you get a peanut butter cup or an English toffee but it’s gone too fast and the taste is fleeting. In the end, you are left with nothing but broken bits filled with hardened jelly and teeth-shattering nuts, which, if you are desperate enough to eat, leaves nothing but an empty box of useless brown paper. ~The X-Files
I couldn’t resist including this classic quote from the X-Files, a more cynical look at the meaning of life. While it is true that no one ever asks for life, and often times it is disappointing, it is easy to change your outlook about the meaninglessness of life into something more exciting.
Life can of course seem meaningless and without a point, but that is dependant entirely on you. If you think it is pointless, then it is, and your actions and behaviors will show that. But you can always create meaning for yourself. This takes you out of the victim mentality and allows you to shape your life into your own personalized ideal. Maybe you love fishing, so you would devote all of your resources to being able to fish as much as you can, or maybe you want to help other people so you go back to school in order to do that. It doesn’t really matter what you choose as your own personal meaning of life as there is no right answer. Everyone is different, but it is so much less depressing to have something going on rather than not. So choose something great to focus on, and start counting your blessings rather than your disappointments!
