Jimi Hendrix said this living your life quote in relation to all of the negative press he was getting as he rose in fame. As he was a totally revolutionary musician, and one of the leading figures of the peace and love movement, the press and the older generation was constantly attacking the way he chose to live his life. Being in the spotlight of the media is never easy, especially when you are seen as leading a counter culture against the status quo. The 1960’s was a time of great political and social change – probably the greatest in recent history and the media at the time reported negatively on everything Jimi Hendrix said or did. Imagine how hard the tabloids are on celebrities now, and multiply that as Hendrix represented a change or shift in thinking that not everyone was comfortable with.
Many of his songs reflect this notion of a struggle against what other people think of you, or why you shouldn’t care what anyone else says about you, and this quote reflects that sentiment perfectly. Jimi says that it is his life and he should be allowed to do whatever he wants to during this life. He is the one who will have to live with the regrets, or consequences of all that he does so why should anyone else have a say. Life is hard, and it is so much harder when you care about what other people think of you.
This is true of all of our lives. All too often your parents or teachers or bosses will tell you how to behave or what to do. Sometimes they mean well, but ultimately the choice is yours and should be yours. You are the only one who can decide how you want to live your life, and you are the only one who will live your life.
Make decisions, take risks, break the rules and do not listen to what anyone else thinks about you. Whatever decisions you make, they will be your own and you can create the life you want to live.
